The same fee, twice: duplicate charges on phone bills

Multi-line phone plans are where duplicate fees hide. A two-minute check and a polite request for a credit.

A family or roommate plan can carry a dozen charges: the plan, a line access charge per line, device installments, protection, add-ons, recovery fees, and taxes. When a line is added, moved, or a phone is upgraded, systems sometimes leave an old charge in place. The result is the same fee, for the same line, billed twice in one period.

How to spot it

  • List every per-line charge and the line it belongs to.
  • Look for the same label and the same amount on the same line, in the same billing period.
  • Check whether the duplicate also appeared last month. If it did, the credit should cover every month.

The ask

Tell the agent which line and which charge appear twice, ask them to remove the duplicate, and ask for a credit for every month it was billed. Write down the reference number.

While you are on the phone

Look at add-ons with zero usage printed on the bill, such as a hotspot add-on on lines that used no hotspot data. And compare each line's data use with the plans the bill lists. If every line uses a few gigabytes, a lower tier may fit. Billdial only cites plans printed on your bill or offers you paste in, and it frames everything else as a question.
